Amie Agamata: Get Comfortable Being Uncomfortable

Amie Agamata has big plans as she steps into her latest role: President-Elect for the Financial Planning Association (FPA)’s NextGen community of new and aspiring financial planners.

Amie has a multi-year goal to create a career pathway and resources to support new entries into the profession. She wants to open up NexGen gatherings to further encourage connection and network building. And she wants to create a repeatable process for succession planning within NexGen.

It comes as no surprise to anyone who knows Amie and her impact on the industry that The American College identified her as a rising star and awarded her its NextGen Financial Services Professional Award.

She was 19 years old and a college finance major looking for experience in the industry when she started working with a wealth management advisor. By the time she graduated, she was already involved with the FPA – a critical step in advancing her career and influence.

“FPA opens a lot of doors. Any opportunity that came my way, I said ‘yes,’ and it led to me being recognized by the American College,” she says.

In today’s episode, Jamie and Ana catch up with Amie in Seattle at FPA’s annual conference. She shares her first money memory, the importance of networking, what it means to be part of the next generation of advisors, her early lessons as an advisor, the collaboration between FPA and Carson Coaching and more.

Key Takeaways

  • To grow your career opportunities, get comfortable being uncomfortable. One way to do this is to get involved. Join the FPA, attend the events, talk to people.
  • NexGen is the FPA’s community of new and aspiring financial planners. It offers an opportunity to talk to like-minded professionals who are experiencing the same things you are and who will push you to a higher level.
  • When a new opportunity opens up or when someone asks you to take on a new challenge, say yes.

Quote

“For me, NexGen means community. Being able to talk to people my age (in the industry) has shown me a lot about my passions. To get involved with NexGen, start with your local chapter or reach out to FPA.” – Amie Agamata
